Mood For the Day

Today's Mood on Sat, 17 Oct 1998

The single white taper illuminated the faces of the seven friends from below. At the same time, the candlelight brought new color to the table: from a deep amber center out to the mahogany edge of the round table in the corner by the kitchen of the coffeeshop.

The house music alternated from swing to acid hip-hop, underlining the old saying 'plus ce change, plus ce meme chose'. The scene could have been as easily taking place five or fifty years ago.

It was in fact the single candle which brought shining light to the joy in the friends' eyes as they laughed and smiled and shared each other's company. The drinks varied as much as the individuals themselves. The candle threw different shadows around the circular table: so did the candlelight draw different silhouettes on the furrows of the faces of the friends around the circle.

Only one of them actually lived in the city for any length of time, and it was the melody of his musical language which shone over the sound of conversations all over the crowded cafe.

The candle added warmth to what might otherwise be forbidding white walls which climbed up behind the group: the candle threw shadows reminiscent of an old scene of peace in the midst of a wartime film.
